Commitment to the Community

Smiles for LifeEast Amherst Dental Center is a member of the Crown Council; an alliance of leading edge dental teams throughout North America that are strongly committed to promoting oral health, fighting oral cancer, and servicing their community through charitable work. Through Crown Council, Dr. Rice and Dr. Wendling have been able to form a unique partnership with Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation and the Smiles for Life Foundation. Over the last four years East Amherst Dental Center has raised over $100,000.00 for children’s charities on both a national and local level.

The Smiles for Life Campaign runs every year from March 1st through June 30th when the team at East Amherst Dental Center offers professional teeth whitening in exchange for a tax-deductible donation for take-home whitening or in-office whitening. The team donates their time and services and 100% of the donations go to charity. The 2007 Smiles for Life campaign will benefit Summit Education Resources helping children with learning disabilities including autism. If you would like to be part of this extraordinary event please call East Amherst Dental Center at 716-689-6300 to set up your whitening appointment.

In the community, the East Amherst Dental Center team works with area schools to offer career exploration internship programs for students considering a career in the dental field. Each February during Dental Education Month the EADC team visits area preschools to educate children on the importance of maintaining optimal oral health.

Our Facility photoNew Patient Visit

As you first walk through our doors, our team will make you feel comfortable, greet you by your first name, offer you a drink, and escort you to a seat in our consultation room. One of our dentists and a team member will talk to you for perhaps an hour and a half to understand your needs and to conduct a comprehensive examination. This may include a review of your dental and medical history, an oral cancer screening, dental x-rays, periodontal charting, education on home-care and periodontal disease, a full TMJ exam including muscle palpations, and possibly a diagnosis. For some patients, it can be an emotional event, charged with painful memories of previous dental visits, and a renewed hope of what can be accomplished. We have helped many phobic patients renew their faith in dentistry and achieve the smile of their dreams. Should you have any questions or concerns before your appointment, please do not hesitate to call.

Lab Techniques in Cosmetic Dentistry photoCosmetic Dentistry

A sparkly smile has a profound effect on how young you look. A whiter and brighter smile that reveals even teeth and a healthy, gleaming pink gum line can take ten years off of your true age.

With cosmetic dentistry, we can make your smile light up a room when you enter it. Through different procedures, we'll create that beautiful smile of which you've been dreaming. With whitening, veneers, implants, crowns and bridges, we can change an average smile into a brilliant one.

Natural-looking alternatives such as advanced metal-free crowns, veneers, bridges, and inlays/onlays look, feel and function like your own teeth, allowing us to conserve as much of the natural tooth as possible. And, did you know that cosmetic dentistry may plump out the wrinkles and lines on the lower third of your face--without surgery?

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry states 9 out of 10, or 92.5 percent of Americans agree that an attractive smile is an important social asset.

Tooth-Colored Fillings
Tooth-colored fillings (bonding) can simply and effectively treat cavities or completely transform the look of your smile, usually in just one visit.

Smile Design
Smile design, using veneers, crowns and bridges, can create a new look for you, making your teeth look straighter, longer, whiter, and more vibrant in as little as three weeks. Bonding or veneers can plump out fine wrinkles by opening up a collapsed bite and the facial sagging that results from it. They can restore normal shape to worn down teeth, and fix widely spaced teeth and gaps in your smile.

Many adults want to change their smiles. Some want to correct problems they have had since childhood, such as discolored, gapped, or crooked teeth. Others want to fix conditions they've developed over time, such as cracked or worn-down teeth, to help create a more youthful smile.

If your teeth are dark or worn and make you look older, if gaps or chips make you feel self-conscious, or if crooked or discolored teeth stop you from smiling fully, a Smile Design can help. Although every patient's smile is unique and may require more or less restoration, some new smiles can be completed in a single visit. A Smile Design can redesign the shape of your gums and teeth, and change the overall look of your smile. It's not just about beautifying your smile, although that is of extreme importance. It's also about adjusting your bite so that it is healthy and strong.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers produce great smiles. Teeth which have been stained, chipped, cracked or otherwise damaged can look beautiful with this strong and durable technique.

Tooth Whitening
Tooth whitening performed in our office, or by using take-home products, is a safe and effective way to enhance your smile by removing stains from your teeth caused by coffee, tea, colas, tobacco products, and even aging. All of these products contribute to a dimmed, stained smile, which suggests aging.

ZOOM!
To whiten your teeth we use the most advanced technology available called Zoom! The process takes a little over an hour and the results are dramatic--up to about eight shades whiter in a little over an hour. You can go on with your day right away with a whiter, brighter smile. It's ideal for anyone who wants immediate results, such as for a wedding or another important occasion.

Invisible Braces
Invisible braces that we provide--such as Invisalign--straighten your teeth without the need for uncomfortable and unsightly metal wires and brackets. While braces produce beautiful results, many patients never wear them for fear of looking unattractive or having many cavities at the end of the treatment.  Invisalign is an alternative way to produce results—and is nearly invisible. By using a series of clear, removable aligners, Invisalign straightens your teeth right before your eyes. Change them about every two weeks, and your teeth will move—little by little, week by week—until they have moved to the final position your dentist has prescribed.

Implants
Implants offer a permanent solution for replacing missing teeth for those patients who are suitable candidates for this treatment. Dental implants have become a choice treatment option for many patients who are missing one or more teeth. A dental implant is a replacement tooth "root" constructed of medical grade titanium. Dental implants are extremely stable, strong and natural looking. Patients with dental implants are able to eat, smile, and laugh without fear of embarrassment that their denture may slip or click, or that their bridge will trap food.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  1. Eat all those delicious foods that are difficult to chew.
  2. Smile without concern about your teeth.
  3. Talk and laugh with the fear of missing teeth being noticed or dentures becoming loose or falling out
  4. Dental implants can never decay.
  5. Dental implants have the potential of lasting a lifetime.

Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges, as well as implants with modern, natural-looking materials can close very wide gaps and restore function, appearance, and the proportion of your smiling face.

If more than half of your tooth has been restored with a filling, a crown is necessary. Without adequate support, the tooth may break away around the filling. As a rule, when fillings get larger, teeth become weaker. That is why a crown is necessary. A crown covers the entire tooth and holds it together. Crowns are used when large fillings wear out, when a tooth is cracked, or when cosmetic improvements must be made on teeth.

Bridges replace missing teeth with artificial teeth, look great and literally bridge the gap where one or more teeth may have been. They fill the unsightly spaces left by missing teeth.

Art and Science photoPartials and Dentures
Dentures can help take the place of missing natural teeth. Dentures allow patients to chew and speak more easily while improving their appearance and often boosting self-confidence. Full dentures are used when all of a patient's teeth need to be replaced. Partial dentures, or bridges, are used when only a few teeth are missing. In either case, dentures can help you look and feel your best.

Jaw Pain (TMJ problems and cures)
Do you have headaches, neck aches, clicking jaws, limited opening range of the jaw or ringing in the ears? It may be TMJ Syndrome. Some 60 million Americans have TMJ. Simply put, TMJ is the syndrome that happens when the muscles in the jaw and the temporomandibular joint are out of alignment or misaligned, causing problems when chewing. In simple terms, the ligaments, muscles, bones and joints do not line up, thereby causing pain.

Symptoms of TMJ

  1. clicking, popping or grating sound when opening or closing the mouth
  2. headaches and/or dizziness
  3. tenderness in jaw muscles
  4. earache
  5. jaws that sometimes lock open when yawning or if mouth is held open
  6. spasm or cramps in the jaw area

Talk to us if you want to stop jaw and headache pain before it starts. Our treatment includes no pills, no shots, no surgery, and no side effects. We can treat these problems because they are most likely caused by clenching your teeth when you're sleeping and occasionally throughout the day. When you clench your teeth you use some of the strongest muscles in your body that can cause morning and tension headaches, and even damage surrounding joints, teeth, and other muscles.

The high-intensity contractions of these powerful muscles become painful and the forces generated cause pain in surrounding tissues, joints, and other muscles. By reducing the intensity of the clenching, you're effectively minimizing the source of the pain.

Preventive Care Preventive Care photo
During regular check-ups and recall visits, we take care to ensure the ongoing health of your teeth. In particular, we strive to prevent cavities and disease by using:

  1. Diagnostic x-rays
  2. Fluoride treatments and sealants
  3. Routine periodontal (gum) examinations
  4. Oral cancer screenings
  5. Laser soft tissue management

Periodontal Disease Management
Time and gum disease can shrink the underlying bone and gum tissue that hold your teeth in place, collapsing the proportions of your face, exposing tooth roots and adding years to your appearance.

Early detection is the key to avoiding costly and painful dental treatment. Prevention begins with the control of plaque and calculus, the main cause of decay and periodontal disease. In fact, the major cause of tooth loss in adults is periodontal disease, which is known as the silent killer of teeth because most patients feel no symptoms until it's too late. With regular dental visits, we can treat gum disease at an early stage, before it gets out of hand.

Technology

Here at the Center, e believe that your smile should not cause you pain, either physically or emotionally. That is why we have invested in the most modern equipment to make sure your experience with us is comfortable and rewarding.

Cerec
This is the only system for creating all-ceramic dental restorations in one office visit.  You will be in and out in a single visit with a permanent, all ceramic crown, onlay, or veneer.  With CEREC, you will have fewer injections, less drilling, and less time taken from your schedule for dentistry.

Most dental restorative methods require more than one visit to the dentist. On the first visit, patients typically receive an injection of anesthesia, a tooth prepared, an impression taken, and a temporary restoration put on the tooth.  The second appointment is generally made for a couple of weeks later. At that time, the patient would get another injection, have the temporary removed, and have a permanent restoration placed.  With CEREC, the procedure is accomplished in a single appointment.  It is fast, accurate, and painless.

digital imaging photoDigital Imaging
This computer allows us to create a new smile for our patients without ever touching their mouths. Patients can see exactly what they can expect from the doctor's smile enhancement plan before it is actually performed.

Digital Radiography
With digital radiography, we take x-rays of your teeth with markedly less radiation to you than with a regular dental x-ray machine. Then we can store your x-rays on our computers and access them faster than ever before. Additionally, your images can be sent electronically to insurance companies, dramatically decreasing processing time and resulting in faster treatment.

intraoral camera technology photoIntraoral Camera
With an intraoral camera, we can magnify your mouth and show you exactly what we're talking about on a computer screen. This allows you to see for yourself the crack, the stain, the gap, and the receding gum line. You needn’t take only our word for it anymore.

Chairside Computers
Our patients have realized many benefits since we computerized and networked our treatment rooms. All intraoral and extraoral photography, patient records, written communication, and clinical information can be shared between the doctor and treatment areas instantly.

Caesy patient education system
To help patients become better informed about dental treatments we use the Casey patient education system. Using language that is easily understood, along with outstanding photographs and graphics, these programs allow us to display information about any dental subject using a computer monitor. We feel that this helps our patients become better informed about their dental treatment and the alternatives available to them.
